Spur
A spur is a hollow sack, sometimes a spike, often tube shaped, in a blossom.  Spurs often carry nectar and are, therefore, considered "nectariferous" (another nifty word to work into a conversation!)

  2. Look at the flower that is sideways (side view). The long pokey things coming out of the back end are the spurs on this flower.

    These are pretty flowers. Are Columbines grown much in central Virgina?
